The initial visit consists of a complete oral examination with emphasis on development of the teeth and soft tissues of the head and neck as well as caries detection. Orthodontic evaluations are performed at this time, and occlusal problems analyzed. Suggestions are made as to the proper guidance of your child's occlusion. A complete x-ray examination will also be done if required. Your child will then receive toothbrush instructions, and with the aid of a new toothbrush, be shown the proper way to clean the teeth and care for the gum tissue. A thorough cleaning of the teeth and a topical fluoride application will be completed on the first visit. A consultation will also be held with parents to discuss in depth any treatment that your child might need and all your questions shall be answered. We would appreciate you preparing your child for this visit by honest explanations expressed in terms your child understands. Please avoid any reference to pain, hurt or needle, since this can only make your child more apprehensive. We will make your child's experience a pleasant one with your help. Two very good books that may be helpful to read before the first visit are "The Berenstain Bears Visit thesolow Dentist" by Stan and Jan Berenstain or "Just Going to the Dentist" by Mercer Mayer. There is also an excellent video on You Tube entitled "Dentist Video 2" which shows a typical first dental visit for a child. I strongly encourage you to watch it with your child. Appointment times are specifically reserved for your child and prompt arrival is appreciated. Since all our patients are children, we unfortunately cannot promise after-school appointments to everyone, but we will be as accommodating as possible.
